A recycling bin fire at a Great Bookham charity is thought to have been started deliberately.

Crews from Leatherhead and Painshill fire stations were called to the Grange in Rectory Lane, Leatherhead at about 3.40am today (Monday, September 12).

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the burning plastic recycling bin.

A spokesman from Leatherhead fire station confirmed that an investigation was being carried out, but it was believed that the fire had been started deliberately.

The Grange is a charity that offers residential care services and training to people with disabilities.

Gill Caldwell, the charity’s marketing and communications manager, said: “It was very small. It was a recycling bin, a plastic one.

“The smoke alarm worked, and the fire brigade were here very quickly. We’re very grateful to them.”

Surrey Police were made aware of the fire but were not required to attend.
