Richard Afful learnt he will be heading off to a prestigious medical school to follow in the footsteps of doctors and nurses who saved his father’s life after receiving his A-Level results last week.

From last week: A-Level Results Day: Students in Epsom, Ewell, Banstead and Leatherhead celebrate 'impressive' results

He was among sixth form and college students in Epsom, Ewell, Banstead and Leatherhead who celebrated “impressive” results on Thursday, August 18.

Richard celebrated his results of ABB with a triumphant drive, having also recently passed his driving test.

He will read Biomedical Science at St George’s Medical School at the University of London.

When Richard was 11 and just starting at Ewell Castle School, his father John had a triple heart bypass operation at St George’s Hospital.

A few years later, John had a heart attack and had a pacemaker and then a defibrillator fitted. He has since recovered well and leads a pretty normal life.

“Medicine saved my father’s life and my mother who is a science teacher has always encouraged and helped me,” Richard explained.

His mother Mary (pictured above with her son) added: “I prayed for this result, he worked so hard and I’m so proud of him.”
