Thieves were cloaked in smoke after triggering an anti-theft device during a break-in at a petrol station in Tadworth in the early hours of this morning.

Two fire extinguishers were stolen from the Shell petrol station in Brighton Road, Tadworth at about 1.15am today (Wednesday, August 17).

Thieves smashed the glass in the front door to force their way inside. Surrey Police believe they also attempted to open a cupboard but were unsuccessful.

The thieves triggered an anti-theft device upon entry to the petrol station, sending thick smoke pouring out into the room.

A crew from Banstead fire station were also called to the petrol station.

A spokesman from Banstead fire station explained: “They triggered a ‘smoke-cloak’ – an anti-theft device that was set off. It fills the room with smoke.

“We just waited for the smoke to dissipate and left in the hands of the police.”
