Epsom schoolchildren served tea and cake to a war veteran and survivor as they learned about the horrors of World War Two during a special coffee morning.

Members of Stamford Green Primary School’s student council waited on Julie Bueck, 87, and Anthony 'Bugs' Bendell OBE, 80, from the Royal Star and Garter home for ex-service personnel in Surbiton.

Two pupils from each year group at the school in Christ Church Mount, Epsom, served Ms Bueck and Mr Bendell and listened attentively to their war stories.

Mr Bendell OBE’s career as a pilot in the RAF spanned 34 years and took him to Canada, Germany, North Africa, Cyprus and the USA.

He told the children about his career between 1953 and 1987, and how the world has changed since then.

Ms Bueck told the children what it was like to be evacuated during the Second World War, and about her husband’s service in the navy.

Emma Williams, Year 1 teacher and student council leader at Stamford Green, said: “They spoke about the war, how they lived through it, and how it was their responsibility to make the world a different place.

“Their message was that ‘You can’t let this happen again.'

“They had a chat about life: what it was like for them, and how different it is now.”
