Mystery surrounds the death of a man by Epsom town centre today.

The body of a man in his forties was found in South Street, Epsom this morning.

His death is currently being treated as unexplained, and Surrey Police say there is no indication of any third-party involvement.

Police cordoned off a block of flats in Epsom town centre this morning, and told residents in Meadside flats, opposite the Ashley Centre, they could not leave while they made door-to-door enquiries.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: “Surrey Police attended South Street in Epsom shortly before 10am today (Wednesday, April 6) following the discovery of the body of a man.

“Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene but the man, who is believed to be in his forties, was sadly declared dead at the scene.

“The death is currently being treated as unexplained but at this stage there is no indication of any third party involvement.

"Enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing."

A witness, who declined to give his name, drove down Ashley Avenue, Epsom at about 10am and then at 12.30pm, and reported seeing a heavy police presence.

He said: “There has been great activity there all morning.

"It is all taped off and there are coppers everywhere.

"Earlier on there were about eight different police cars and paramedics.

"When I drove back it was down to three marked cars and a paramedic wagon."
