Inmates at a Banstead prison are under investigation after fires broke out in three cells at HMP High Down.

Banstead Fire Station and Epsom Fire and Rescue Service each sent one fire engine to the incident after emergency calls were made at 9.24pm on Monday September 28.

They were at the Banstead prison for about one hour and ten minutes.

The fire crews used high pressure hose reels to put out the fires.

Firemen wore breathing apparatus for protection as they rescued the prisoners.

It is believed the fire was started using "smoking materials".

Her Majesty’s Prison Service is now investigating the incident.

A statement from the Ministry of Justice read: "Staff at HMP High Down quickly extinguished three very small cell fires on Monday evening.

"No staff or prisoners were injured and the incident has been reported to the police for investigation."

Firefighters were also called to HMP High Down in August after a prison allegedly barricaded himself in his cell and started a fire.
