A member of the royal family opened a new multi-million pound teaching block at an Epsom secondary school.

The Duke of Gloucester, first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, visited Glyn School on Thursday September 24.

He met and inspected cadets at the school's Combined Cadet Force before chatting to students working towards their gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

The royal met architects who explained design features of the building, head boy, Sean Jayakrishna, and head girl, Olivia Keen, sixth formers in their private study area as well as governors and members of the Parent Staff Association.

He then unveiled a plaque to officially open the new £3.6m Chaloner Building at the The Kingsway site in Epsom.

The building is named in honour of Jon Chaloner, who served as head teacher of Glyn for nine years and is now chief executive officer of multi-academy trust GLF Schools, which runs Glyn.

Current head teacher Philip Wheatley said: "This fabulous addition to Glyn is a fitting tribute to the exceptional work of Jon Chaloner.

"It was a great thrill for the whole Glyn community to welcome the Duke of Gloucester to open our new building, a building that provides 18 modern classrooms as well as a learning resource centre, meeting rooms and a common room."
