Elderly Epsom residents have been warned to be on their guard after a conman claiming to need to borrow money for a locksmith duped a number of people into handing over money.

The most recent incident took place in West Hill on August 31 when a man, claiming to be the victim’s neighbour, asked to borrow £80 and then fled once it had been handed over.

Surrey Police’s appeal described the suspect as a man aged between 18 and 20 years old, of 5ft 9in and slim build, with mousey brown hair.

He was reportedly clean-shaven, and wearing jeans and a light-coloured t-shirt.

Detective Sergeant Ruth Atkins said: “The suspect has targeted an elderly resident, which makes this crime all the more despicable.

“We are urging residents to be vigilant and never hand over any money to people who just show up on their doorstep or even approach them in the street or a car park, no matter how plausible or heart-wrenching their story is.

“We are also urging Epsom residents to keep an eye out for anyone spotted acting suspiciously in the area and to report any sighting to us as soon as possible.
