A well-loved cop from TV series The Bill took part in a vintage car run to open a popular village day this weekend.

Ashtead Village Day featured inflatable giant battles, maypole dancing, a fun fair, a falconry display, bands, a dog show, silver band and pony rides.

Eric Richard, better known as Sergeant Bob Cryer from The Bill, was a passenger in one of the vintage cars during a procession through the village.

Len Wood, from Ashtead Rotary Club, which organised the day, said: "People were delighted he came. He was friendly and chatted to all those who wanted to chat. You can’t ask for more."

Mr Wood added: "The gods smiled on us. It stayed nice and dry all day Saturday. We had thousands and thousands of people who all turned up. Everything went very smoothly."
