A man was seriously assaulted after getting into an argument on an open-top bus at the Epsom Derby.

The attack happened at 6pm on Saturday, June 6, in The Hill area of the event after two men got into a dispute on the top deck of a stationary open-top bus, a number of which were parked up on the Downs so people could enjoy the world-famous horse race.

The men got off the bus before the victim, a man in his 20s, was assaulted, resulting in a deep cut to the back of his head.

A man in his 20s from London was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been released on bail until Thursday, July 16, while the investigation continues.

Police believe witnesses may have filmed the incident on mobile phones and would like to get hold of the footage.

Detective Constable Paul Overton said: "The Investec Derby Festival is a very popular event with people visiting the area from all over the country for the occasion.

"The majority of people come to enjoy themselves and have a good time but a few try to spoil the atmosphere by causing trouble.

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the assault, the events surrounding it or who may have captured it on camera to contact police with information."

Ten arrests were made at the event for offences including being drunk and disorderly, assault, child neglect, possession of an offensive weapon, public order and drugs offences.

Anyone with information should call the police on 101 quoting reference 45150047907 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
