As thousands of racegoers prepare to descend on Epsom for the Derby, police have warned people not to drink on the streets.

Epsom and Ewell neighbourhood team said restrictions on public drinking will apply in the town centre on Ladies’ Day tomorrow and Derby Day this Saturday.

It posted on Facebook: "If you come into town you, or a group you may be with, may be asked to surrender open or closed drink bottles or cans.

"If there is persistent ASB [anti-social behaviour] we also have the powers to direct a person of group to leave the area and not return for up to 48 hours."

The team said it will be out and about to keep anti-social behaviour down, deal with incidents, direct out-of-towners and keep the traffic flowing.

It added: "As with previous years there will be road closures and parking restrictions, so if you are going out this weekend make sure you know before you go."

Waterloo Road will be closed around Epsom station and traffic is likely to remain slow around Station Approach during peak hours.

Superintendent Jon Savell, said: "We are expecting thousands of people from across the country to travel to Epsom to enjoy two exciting days of racing.

"Our number one aim this weekend is to work with the event organisers to prevent crime and disorder so that people can enjoy this prodigious event.

"We will also work with partner agencies to minimise disruption to local people and ensure that travel to and from the event is as trouble free as possible.

"While security measures have been put in place I would still like to ask for the co-operation and vigilance of people attending to ensure everyone remains safe."
