A former dressmaker who used to ride on the back of her husband’s motorcycle has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Vera Hughes, who lives at Downs Cottage Care Home in Epsom, was once a dressmaker in Balham and later did sewing at home for the factory.

One of her two sons, Alan Hughes, said: "She worked full-time being our mother, she threw everything into it. We were a motorcycling family. My dad loved motorbikes, she used to ride on the back and I used to be in the side car."

Her family came together to celebrate her 100th birthday on Sunday, May 3. Mr Hughes said: "It was really lovely, everyone enjoyed it."
