Alarmed residents have called for action to deal with traffic problems on a "very dangerous" road after a schoolboy was hit by a motorcycle on Thursday.

The bike knocked down a Year 9 Blenheim High School student, who skidded under a parked car in Sefton Road, Epsom, just before 9am.

School staff, emergency services and members of the public rushed to help the schoolboy who was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A neighbour, who heard the crash and went out to help, said there is too much traffic on the road and too many cars park on both sides of it.

She said: "You can’t see to drive down the road or cross the road. The boy stepped out between two parked cars.

"The motorbike was driving down the road and hit him. He skidded across the road and underneath a parked car."

She praised the school's staff members who rushed to help the boy and described the firefighters, police and paramedics as "really quick, very professional".

But she added: "The sad thing is it’s been an accident waiting to happen because the parking issue is getting progressively worse and the traffic issue is getting progressively worse.

"How many accidents do we have to have until the council are responsive to dealing with the parking issue?"

A driver, who saw the crash while driving his children to school, said: "I don’t think the biker was going at high speed. He controlled the bike and came to a halt in the middle of the road. He came off and immediately went to the boy."

He said the "very, very dangerous" road has cars parked on both sides and drivers cannot see others pulling out of side roads. He added: "They should do something about the road."

Another resident said she believed the speed limit should be lowered to 20 mph or humps should be introduced to slow down traffic.

She said: "We have got cars parked on both sides so it’s difficult to see. This has been an accident waiting to happen. I’m surprised there’s not been more accidents with school kids."

A Surrey County Council spokesman said: "The safety of our children is our top priority and we are always looking at ways we can improve the safety of our roads so we will inspect the site to see if there is anything that needs to be done."

East Surrey Casualty Reduction Officer PC John Fruen said: “Road safety is an area we take extremely seriously and we understand the concerns raised by the public regarding Longmead Road, in Epsom.

“We have previously carried out extensive awareness and educational events involving the public and local schools in this area. This has included Road Education and Enforcement Days which involves stopping and educating drivers and engaging with pedestrians.

“Following the incident on Thursday, May 14, we have been in discussions with Surrey County Council regarding the possibility of further awareness events in the area.  The implementation of any road safety measures lies with Surrey County Council.”
