Dog lovers have scattered the ashes of a stray lurcher who captured the heart of a community.

The dog, nicknamed Houdini, was killed on the road this month after having roamed around Ashtead and the surrounding area since Easter.

More than £600 was raised online to cover the cremation costs and to support Hounds First Sighthound Rescue in the stray's memory.

The fundraising page posted: "To all the generous people who have donated to Houdini/Coco may I say a very big thank you.

"Houdini was cremated on Thursday and his ashes are being scattered on Sunday. His legacy will live on and we will remember him."

On Sunday Community Facebook page What's On In in Epsom posted: "Houdini the dog has been laid to rest tonight.

"He may have been just another stray dog BUT in his short time in the area he has brought a community together. Our thought to all those who tried to save him."
