A project that began with John Inverdale driving a spade into the ground has raised £80,000.
Man Shed, a scheme Princess Alice Hospice hopes will reach bereaved and terminally-ill men who are not accessing the services.
Mr Inverdale visited the hospice to raise awareness of the project on Wednesday, March 25.
Chief executive Nicki Shaw said: "We're delighted our supporters have responded so positively to the project and are very grateful for the tremendous amount that they have helped to raise so far.
"This initial funding means that we can begin to proceed with our plans to create a practical space where our missing men can come together, put their skills and energy to use while talking to others who may be in the same situation and getting the support they need to face the future."
The project could get £10,000 more from Aviva if enough votes are received. Supporters can vote at community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/799/ Information about Man Shed can be found at pah.org.uk/manshed.
