A stray dog, nicknamed Houdini, has reportedly been killed on the road despite the best efforts of community members to rescue it.

More than £300 has already been raised online to cover the cremation costs and to support Hounds First Sighthound Rescue in the dog's memory.

The lurcher had captured the heart of the community after roaming around Ashtead and the surrounding area since Easter.

UPDATE: Witness sees car hit Houdini as dog chases fox across road

Facebook group What’s on in Leatherhead announced that a greyhound looking dog was found at the side of the A217 at about 1am on Bank Holiday Monday.

The group said: "I am sad to say it’s been confirmed it was Houdini. Our hearts go out to all those who have tried so hard to save him.

"But he was so quick and so scared. RIP Houdini. Go and run safely among the stars."

Jane Hughes, who has been on the lookout for the dog, said: "It seems that Houdini moved areas and many sightings were recorded in the Banstead area.

"Sadly though, in the early hours of Monday, May 4, Houdini's body was recovered by side of road on the A217 (Tattenham Corner Way) - it seems he was knocked down and left.

"Arrangements have been made for his cremation to be followed by the scattering of his ashes in the woods where he first ran free.

"So many from Ashtead and surrounding areas were touched by Houdini's plight and they became united in the search for Houdini. An unusual, but welcome show of community in this day and age."
