The battle for political power in the borough has begun with the list of people standing in the council elections published yesterday.

The Residents’ Association councillors have had majority control of Epsom and Ewell Council for more than 70 years - it is one of the few councils in the country not run by the main political parties.

In the outgoing council, there were 26 RA councillors, six Liberal Democrat councillors, three Labour councillors and three Conservative councillors.

The Residents Associations and other parties are putting forward another raft of candidates this time, but there are no UKIP council candidates and only one Green Party hopeful.

Councillors are elected every four years and each ward has three councillors, apart from Auriol ward which has just two.

In the last council, the Labour councillors were all based in Court ward while the Liberal Democrats were located in College, Town and Stamford wards. Tories had seats in Stoneleigh and Ruxley wards.
