A garden centre worker has said being deaf has not caused him any problems during half a century of working at the same place.

Brian Napier, 68, was given a surprise presentation to mark his 50th work anniversary at Ashtead Park Garden Centre last week.

Mr Napier said by email: "I do not find being deaf a problem at all. I have a great relationship with all my colleagues and customers.

"This was my first job when I left school in 1965 - it turned out to be my only job and I love it. Back then it was just a nursery garden centre, mainly open ground with green houses for bedding plants etc.

"I have seen it develop and grow with the new café and shop and, of course, bigger plant area for retail plants."

The garden centre said: "Our very own Brian celebrated 50 years working here at Ashtead Park on Monday 19th January.

"Owner John Dipre and the rest of the staff surprised him with a presentation in the shop. John gave Brian a watch and champagne and the Olive Tree provided a special cake for the occasion."

It added: "All of us here congratulate Brian and are proud to have him as part of our team."

Mr Napier's top five tips for gardeners:

1. Keep motivated

2. Lots of enthusiasm

3. Don’t be afraid to just ‘have a go’

4. Keep on top of the tidying up

5. Most important enjoy your garden!
