A young mum is desperate after her single room was flooded, her belongings ruined and she now fears she could be shipped out to Crawley.

Terriann Adams, 22, who has a six-month baby, said the radiator fell off the wall of her temporary accommodation in Berridale, College Road, Epsom, on Tuesday.

According to Ms Adams she is now having to pay Rosebery Housing Association an extra £53 a month, which she cannot afford, for another room in the same building.

She said the only other alternative is being sent away to Crawley - far away from friends, family and her sick mother who needs care following a stroke.

In tears yesterday morning, she said: "I’m destroyed. It’s the only furniture I’ve got and it’s ruined. Everything is ruined.

"The fact they are trying to send me to Crawley, I can’t do it, it’s stressing me out."

She said a Rosebery officer told her yesterday that if she did not pay the extra money for the flat then she would be referred back to the council and transferred to Crawley.

But a Rosebery spokesman said he has no idea where the reference to Crawley came from and Ms Adams declined the offer of a first floor bedsit in the same house at no extra cost.

Ms Adams said this was because she cannot climb stairs because of her bad legs, but the spokesman said they were not aware of "any medical evidence" to support her request for ground floor accommodation.

He said: "She asked to be temporarily rehoused in a self-contained one bedroom flat in the same building, which is currently vacant. This bigger flat involved a higher rent.

"She agreed voluntarily to be responsible for any extra rent involved. This was her decision."

In response, she said: "I had no choice."

The single mum said she first warned the housing association that her radiator had become loose back in September. She also said there has been no heating for months until today - a claim denied by the housing association.

She said: "It’s just disgusting. I can’t even bathe my baby here because it’s too cold. I have told them on numerous occasions that my radiator is hanging on by a thread and they never sent anyone out."

Ms Adams said she is on the council’s housing waiting list and moved to the room in Epsom in July after about five months in temporary accommodation in Horley.

She said she has been sleeping on a mattress on the floor with her baby because she cannot fit a bed and a cot in the small room.

A Rosebery spokesman said they are "still investigating the circumstance" of her report that the radiator fell off the wall, but agree that the room is now "uninhabitable".

If unwilling to accept their offers, he said she was advised to ask Epsom Council to assess her housing needs. She was also advised to find out if she is eligible for housing benefit for the larger flat.
