Following the decision by Epsom Council to limit the hours of Boogie Lounge nightclub after police advised that the night economy in Epsom has become a cause for concern at a county level, reporter Iona Napier went onto the town's streets to find out what locals really think about the issue.

Your Local Guardian:

Alex Eddleston, 23, graduate engineer, from Leatherhead:

"Elements is an awful place, absolutely terrible. The kind of people that go there are the kind of people you don’t really want to see on a night out. Jeremy Kyle on a night out. It’s not a surprise that there have been almost 50 incidents in Epsom. It all depends when you get kicked out of a club. If it’s at 1am that might be a problem - there’s nothing else around here open at 2am. All they are really doing is stopping people coming here and sending them further afield."

Your Local Guardian:

Anthony Easey, 43, from Epsom:

"The drinking culture doesn’t seem to be a problem as far as I know. I am not aware of any issues, we usually just go to the pub. I have never come across any aggressive behaviour. It would be a shame for the area if they shut down the nightclubs. You hear things about the clubs and bars in Sutton but nothing from here. [In Sutton there are] stories such as smashing shop windows and throwing bins down the street. It’s really hard for small businesses and shops to cope with that kind of thing."

Your Local Guardian:

James Wilson, 82, retired telecoms worker, from West Ewell:

"Honestly, I have never noticed anything and I am always in the centre of town at 11.30pm on a Saturday. The trouble comes when people drink too much, but that’s life. We have all been young once, we have all done silly things. But it is just part of growing up – if you shut down the bars they will just go and do it somewhere else. They work all week and just need to relax. I have lived here 64 years and never noticed a real drinking problem. In the past Boogie Lounge was where we used to see stuff going on but that was long ago, they seem to have improved things."

Your Local Guardian:

Tony Corbett, 55, taxi driver, from Reigate:

"It’s the worst at about 3am when the last drinks are served at Elements. That is when you tend to get the problems. People don’t want to pay for the cab or they haven’t got any money. It’s different for the black cab drivers but many mini cabs have big problems with people leaving without paying. For us, we are separate from the passengers and they are locked in so they can’t leave without paying. When people are very drunk we would rather they don’t use us anyway."

Your Local Guardian:

Fahim Wadair, 25, controller of Epsom & Ewell Cars, from Putney:

"Before, we never used to lock this door, but they leave bottles and food on the floor. Sometimes they get angry if they don’t get a cab straight away – screaming and shouting. There are too many fights. I have no idea why it has got worse but now we have shut the front door – before, we used to let them come inside. A couple of months ago they smashed our computers. Aggressive behaviour happens usually during the weekend. If clubs close earlier, it won’t make a difference for us. They’ll end up drinking anyway. The council has got to do something about it – it has the responsibility. You come into work the next morning and find rubbish, bottles, and food bags."

Your Local Guardian:

Laine Thatre Arts student Gareth Moran, 17, and Kyia Johnston, 16

Gareth Moran: "The nightlife in Epsom is dim and boring. Boogie’s is really bad and there is no good music anywhere in Epsom – you have to go to Kingston or London to go out.

"It is because our school is amazing that we live in Epsom, not the nightlife. If bars start closing there would be even less to do. On the other hand, it feels very safe here, that’s a nice thing."

Kyia Johnston: "I have never been treated as badly as I was at Elements – it was a booked party for under 18s but we were herded into a separate room and guarded until we ended-up being thrown out."

Your Local Guardian:

Aga Skiba, 28, a florist in the Ashley Centre:

"My friend who lives on the High Street gets very angry about the drinking and the noise, but I think it is only a couple of places that cause problems. The only reason people think it is so loud is because it is such a quiet place, so people kick off all the more. I think it’s pretty normal – there aren’t many young people here."
