A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a pedestrian was killed in a crash.

A woman, 39, died after being hit by a black Primastar Nissan van in Old Malden Lane, Worcester Park, at 11.13am on Saturday.

The Worcester Park blog website reported that the woman was jogging down the lane.

The woman reported to be from the Worcester Park area was flown by air ambulance to St George’s Hospital in Tooting but died on Sunday.

A 34-year-old man from the Surbiton area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and also dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail until January 8 as the investigation continues.

Billy Summers, from Epsom, said he saw the air ambulance land at the River Club, in Old Malden Lane, as well as paramedics and police officers rushing to help.

Mr Summers said: “I was driving home and it was all blocked off. It’s shocking I know what them lanes are like, quite dangerous. You do get speeding down there quite a lot.”

Epsom and Ewell Neighbourhood Inspector Michael Hodder said on Facebook: “This a horrific incident and one that is shocking for all of us but we cannot image the pain, shock and helplessness that the family of the young lady are going through.”

He said traffic police officers and collision investigators shut the road to give the woman some privacy and to make sure emergency crews could work safely and quickly.

He said: “To some a shut road is an inconvenience but having been a traffic sergeant I know how vital it is to assist in the investigation that we undertake on behalf of the victim and of course ultimately the suspect as the evidence that is gathered is presented to the courts for them to make a decision.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at about 11am on Saturday to reports of a road traffic collision on Old Malden Lane in Worcester Park.

“We sent a single responder by car, an ambulance crew, a duty officer and London’s air ambulance to the scene.

“We treated a woman for a head injury.  She was taken by air ambulance to St George’s Hospital, Tooting, a major trauma centre."

Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 101, quoting the reference number P14321663.
