Remembrance events will be held across the borough to mark the signing of the Armistice which signalled the end of World War One.

Services are expected to be particularly well attended this year as it is the centenary of the start of that war.

A field of remembrance enabling people to place a cross in memory of those who died in war will be created at Bourne Hall, in Spring Street, Ewell, for three weeks. 

It will officially be opened on November 4, at 11am.

On Saturday, November 8, Epsom’s mayor will lay wreaths at the Horton memorial, All Saints Church memorial and Dog Gate memorial in Ewell.

The next day, November 9, the mayor will visit the two memorials at Ashley Road at 9.30am.

There will be a remembrance day service at St Mary’s Church, Ewell, starting with wreath laying at 10.30am.

St Martin of Tours Church, Epsom, will also hold a service at 10am.

A remembrance event will be held at St Mark's Church, in Great Tattenhams from 10am in which uniformed groups will take part.

At 1.30pm, a community walk has been organised by What’s On in Epsom from Epsom marketplace to the Ashley Road war memorials.

On Tuesday, November 11, the national two minute silence will be observed at 11am with a short service at Epsom clocktower, with the Royal British Legion.

Prayers, readings and poems will be read by the mayor’s chaplain, the deputy mayor, Epsom Council’s chief executive, the Royal British Legion, Burma Star Association, 135 Geographic Sqn, a cadet, students and clergy from other faiths within the borough.

Traffic in the market place area will be stopped for the two minute silence.

On Saturday, November 15, St Mark's Church, in Great Tattenhams, will be hosting a history display Tattenham Corner at War, from 10am to 3pm.

On the same day, it will be screening the film War Horse on a big screen for free at 7pm.

On November 18, the church will be hosting Three Choirs, One Concert which will see the Metropolitan Police Male Voice Choir, The Beacon Singers and Sing! Epsom Downs join forces to put on a fundraising concert at 7.30pm.

In Ashtead, a service of remembrance will be held on November 9, at Ashtead Baptist Church, in Barnett Wood Lane, at 9.30am.

St Mary and St Nicholas Parish Church, in Church Road, Leatherhead, will be holding its service at 9.45am.

On the same day, the Banstead Remembrance Day service will be held.

People are asked to assemble at 10.30am at the corner of the High Street and Avenue Road, Banstead.

The parade will proceed to the war memorial, where the service will take place.

Epsom’s mayor Councillor Robert Foote will be attending the World War One commemoration ceremonies in Chantilly, France - Epsom and Ewell’s twin town - as a guest of the mayor of Chantilly.

While in Chantilly, the mayor will be visting the Perreuse Chateau Franco British National Cemetery to lay a wreath at the grave of Private Archibald Jones, 2nd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment, who died of wounds, aged 29, on September 7, 1914.

Coun Foote will also be visiting a memorial to the missing in La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre to lay wreaths for Private Charles Morley, 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, who was killed in action, aged 26, on September 16, 1914, and Private Philip Morley, 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, who was killed in action, aged 29, on September 19, 1914.

All three soldiers were residents of Epsom.

A spokesman for Epsom Council said the Mayor is paying for this visit himself and it will not be paid for by public funds.
