A new primary school should be built on a site earmarked for homes and a new supermarket in Epsom town centre, according to the area's county councillor.

Tina Mountain, Surrey County Councillor for Epsom Town and Downs, believes a new school should be created on the Upper High Street development site.

She said: "Epsom Council plan another 150 plus homes for the Upper High Street development. 150 more families to be homed - wonderful - but where will their children go to school?

"Every child is entitled to a school place but are they not also entitled to go to a local school where their friends will be local, where hopefully they can walk to school?

"How can this Residents’ Association-run council [Epsom Council] keep allowing more homes without considering the infrastructure - schools, doctors, even water and drains?

"Epsom Council please allow the county to build a school on the Upper High Street development before you build any more homes.

"Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose want to build, why? Within a short walk of and in Epsom High Street alone there are seven large and small supermarkets."

In response to Coun Mountain’s call for a new school, an Epsom Council spokesman said: "School place planning is the responsibility of the county council.

"SCC has never proposed a new school for this site which is earmarked for residential and retail development."
