A wing in a mansion once home to President John F Kennedy’s father has been put on the market for £1.1m.

Headley Park, in Tilley Lane, Headley, Epsom, was a Victorian country mansion built in 1898 by John Mappin, on the site of a former Georgian mansion which was destroyed by fire.

Mappin founded royal jewellers Mappin and Webb, based in London, which still holds the royal warrant as silversmiths to the Queen and the Prince of Wales.

After World War Two, the house was converted into seven separate properties, of which the home for sale, Farriers, is one.

The mansion hosted many distinguished figures, including Joseph Kennedy, the father of American president JFK, who stayed there for many months during World War Two, before it was taken over by the Canadian High Commission until the end of the war.

In the last five years, Farriers has been restored and its current owners, Robbie and Helen Gelder, are reluctantly moving on.

Your Local Guardian:

They said: "You only have to walk inside to realise what a magnificent property Headley Park is.

"The grandeur of the rooms is breathtaking, and when we bought the house five years ago we knew we wouldn’t get such an opportunity again."

This wing of Headley Park is on sale for £1,175,000.

Robert Muat, Aston Mead sales manager, said: "This is a very special home with impressively high ceilings, huge windows and beautifully proportioned rooms.

"Historically, this four-bedroom wing of the house contained the main reception rooms - so you have all the magnificence of the country mansion, including spectacular fireplaces and plaster mouldings."
