Epsom contains five of the best green spaces in the country.

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy has announced its Green Flag Award parks and green spaces for 2014 and Epsom Common, Ewell Court Park, Alexandra Recreation Ground, Rosebery Park and Nonsuch Park are all on the list.

A Green Flag flying above the park is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Paul Todd, the scheme’s manager, said: "A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.

"Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.

Jan Mason, chairman of Epsom Council’s leisure committee, said "We're very proud of all of our parks and green spaces and particularly of the award winners.

"These awards are a great endorsement of the work of council staff and the army of local volunteers, who work all year round, rain and shine, to make these green spaces attractive and accessible to both the local residents and wildlife."
