Friends and those close to a "lovely" mother and son killed in a car crash are raising money for benches in their memory.

Nicola Morris, 29, and her son Kai Arnold, 11, died in a head-on car crash in Banstead Road, Ewell, on July 5.

More than £900 has already been raised towards a memorial bench to be placed in Woodmansterne Green and a trust fund for Ms Morris’ other son Alfie.

Kai's friend Jake Noakes, 13, said: "I am raising money for a memorial bench to be put in Woodmansterne near the carved out log as this was where they grew up and also one of their favourite places.

"Nicola was one of the most nicest people you will ever meet. She never did anything wrong, she would do her best to help anyone.

"I could say Kai was the nicest young boy as well but he weren't. He was a typical young boy. Even though he was a typical young boy he would try his hardest to please everyone and that was the best thing about Kai.

"When I first found out about the crash like most people I didn't believe it. Until I saw it on the news I didn't fully believe it. Then I saw it on Facebook and I knew it was real.

"It was hard but now I'm glad I can do something to keep Kai and Nicola in the village."

In addition to Jake's plans for a memorial bench, Pat Johnson, 47, a friend of Ms Morris’ mother, who used to live in the same street as her, said they will be holding an auction night to raise money for a memorial bench and the trust fund.

She said: "It will be nice for residents to sit there and remember them.

"I watched Nicola grow up. She was always cheery, always had a smile on her face and was a lovely person, beautiful looking.

"It’s a tragedy. What has astounded me the most is the local community, something like this brings everyone together again. It makes you realise life is precious, none of us know when our time is up."
