A car caught fire in the middle of traffic on the M25 last night.

Firefighters were called to the flames on the clockwise carriageway between junction 8, at Reigate, and junction 9, at Leatherhead, at 8.10pm, on July 27.

Ros Earl said he drove past the car at about 8.15pm and saw its driver warning others cars.

He said: "The car was engulfed in flames and the driver was waving at the traffic.

"I dialled emergency services and was told they were already on their way.

"I then saw the fire engine come on to the opposite carriageway from junction 9. I was concerned that the car would go up as we drove past."

A Leatherhead fire station spokesman said firefighters in breathing apparatus used hose reels to fight the flames.
