A man has been released without charge after a badly injured man was found lying in the road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The victim was still in a serious condition in St George's Hospital, in Tooting, on Tuesday evening, after he was found with severe head injuries in Breech Lane, Walton-on-the-Hill, at about 12.30am on July 20.

A police spokesman said a man, who had been arrested on suspicion of GBH, was released and the investigation continues.

Following a public appeal for information, police were told that the victim, believed to be in his 30s, and another man were involved a fight and chase on Saturday night.

Temporary Detective Inspector Sailesh Limbachia said: "I would like to thank the public for coming forward so quickly following the appeal at the weekend, which means we now have a clearer understanding of the situation.

"However we are still unsure about the circumstances of how the man sustained his injuries.

"We need to hear from anyone who was in the Breech Lane area between 12.15am and 12.30am and who may have seen the two men, either before or after the victim was found in the street.

"It may be that you were on your way home at that time in the morning from a night out and saw what happened, or live nearby and saw something out of the ordinary, if so we urgently need to hear from you."

Police have examined the scene, reviewed CCTV footage and made house-to-house enquiries.
