In the wake of a fatal car crash that killed a mother and son, more than 650 people have signed a petition calling for a speed camera on the road to prevent another tragedy.

Nicola Morris, 29, and her son Kai Arnold, 11, died in a head-on collision on a bend in Banstead Road, Ewell, on Saturday, July 5, at about 10.30am.

Another crash victim, a woman in her 50s, remains in a serious condition in a London hospital.

Although the cause of this accident has yet to be established, Ms Morris’ former colleague Kathryn McCourt, 25, has started a petition to make the road safer and prevent speeding.

Ms McCourt, from Stoneleigh, said: "The reason I set this up is not only for Nicola and Kai and to ensure another tragic accident like this never happens again - where a loving mother and her son lose their lives - but to stop people speeding down this road as it is a very dangerous road."

Ms McCourt said there has already been great support for the petition but she needs 1,500 signatures before Surrey County Council will take it seriously.

She said: "I think by adding a speed camera it will ensure no one speeds, I know the road is a very long one but towards the middle of the road is the most dangerous!

"I know people use the gym regularly at night so I really believe that by adding one people will be more cautious whilst driving down the road.

"If we try to reduce the speed then at least we have tried to save more lives."

Ms McCourt and Ms Morris worked together at Teddies Nurseries in Epsom from 2012 to 2013, before they both later left the company.

Ms McCourt said: "She was such a loving, caring person and really easy to talk to, she was very approachable and always smiling!"

She added: "I saw her only a couple of weeks before she died, she was talking about her wedding plans and was chuffed that Kai had got into his high school of his choice! She was so happy!

"It's so tragic, my brother had told me on the Saturday about a lady and her son being killed and it was horrible, I could only think of the family. Then later on in the night I found out it was Nicola.

"I was in shock for a good week, her poor family, she was so looking forward to getting married and always talking about Kai and Alfie her other son.

"It's so horrible to think about it, such a terrible shame. She was such a delight to work with and talk to, never complained about anything and always such a hard worker!

"On the Sunday me and a few girls who worked with Nicola went to lay flowers, we also signed one of my old teddies T-shirts and left it there, she will always be a part of Teddies Epsom.

"We have had a lot of support from people with the petition but we still need more signatures."

On Saturday community Facebook group, What’s On in Banstead, posted: "Two weeks ago Nicola and Kai tragically lost their lives so young in a horrific collision on Banstead Road.

"Their family have asked me to pass on their thanks to all the well wishers and also some details about them being laid to rest.

"The funeral is being held on Friday the 25th July and the cortege will be starting in Woodmansterne at 12.30pm.

"It will be circling round to Woodmansterne School where Kai was a pupil and then round to the Woodman Pub and on down Woodmansterne Lane.

"At around 12.40/12.45 it will be travelling the length of Banstead High Street before going on to a service for family and friends.

"There is a trust fund being set up for Alfie as so many people have wanted to give something to him and other donations for the air ambulance.

"It would be really nice for Banstead Village to show it's support to the family so if you are around these locations please just stop for a moment when you see them come past."
