A woman whose toddler got trapped in a toilet training seat and had to be freed by firemen wants to warn other mums of the risk.

Sarah Pitt, of Longfield Crescent, in Tadworth, laughed when her two-and-a-half-year-old Emily wandered into the family’s living room on Saturday afternoon with the seat round her neck.

But her chuckles soon turned to fear when she and her husband Adam found they could not remove the frame after 45 minutes of trying and calling family and friends to ask for advice.

In desperation the couple called Epsom fire station for guidance - never expecting it to dispatch a fire engine to the house so burly firefighters could cut their daughter free.

The 35-year-old said: "Emily had found her way into the bathroom where the seat is kept behind the toilet.

"She had somehow got it onto her head and pushed it down to her neck.

"The firemen spent five minutes cutting it off with the blade of a hacksaw.

"It has been scary for her because she has been waking up in the night screaming.

"It was her brother’s seat as Emily isn’t potty training yet, so he was upset.  The other three children starting panicking and getting scared."

Mrs Pitt said she believes there should be a safety warning with the seats so parents can be aware of the risk of this happening.

She added: "Emily’s not the smallest two-year-old.  She’s quite big.  It was a first for us and the fire station."

Commenting on the Epsom Guardian's facebook page, Mr Pitt said: "All my little girl keeps talking about is how the fire men help her lol."
