A 100-mile cycle race will once again pass through Leatherhead this summer, it was announced today.

The route for the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 will remain essentially the same as last year with only minor changes.

Riders will start at the Olympic Park, go out through London, cycle the roads of Surrey and return to the capital.

The mass-participation cycling race is followed by the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic, a race for 150 of the world’s top professional male riders.

The route has been changed slightly to enable better access to towns such as Leatherhead and will go on to Oxshott this year.

Councillor David Hodge, leader of Surrey County Council, said organisers had been asked to limit the impact on residents and businesses.

Coun Hodge said: "We’re pleased they’ve introduced several rolling road closures and focused the afternoon action around Dorking this year.

"We’re looking forward to another fantastic day of cycling in Surrey that will draw thousands of visitors to our towns and villages, raise millions for good causes and showcase our county to the world."

Jamie Chisholm, owner of Bike Bean Cycle Café in Ashtead, said: "I rode it last year and it was the best 100 miles I have ever done.

"I’m looking forward to it becoming a regular annual event and hopefully Surrey residents can learn to accept it and live with it happily."

Mick Bennett, race director of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic, said: "We have a great race in prospect on a fantastic route."
