Sheltered housing with 24-hour care could be built on part of playing fields in the heart of Ewell Village.

A public meeting about the proposals to create a 60-unit development on 2.5 acres of the 11-acre playing fields in Old Schools Lane is being held tomorrow, Wednesday, November 6.

Nonprofit organisation Nonsuch Abbeyfield wants to carry out the development and is promising to revamp the adjacent playing fields for public use.

The proposed £13m development includes sheltered accommodation with care on site, with communal dining and recreation areas.

At the same time it would sort out the drainage and subsidence problems on the playing fields and replace the current facilities with a modern sports pavilion.

In a letter to the Epsom Guardian, Nonsuch Abbeyfield chairman Graham Walker said they have been in discussions with the owners of the playing fields since late 2011.

He said: "We hope that we have now developed proposals for the development of the site, including substantially upgraded sports facilities, that will be acceptable to local people and provide an important new capacity for serving the needs of older people and more effective sports facilities for local sports users."

Nonsuch Abbeyfield is managed by volunteers from the community and has run sheltered homes in Ewell, Cheam and Sutton for more than 30 years.

There will be a drop-in session, between 3.30pm to 5.30pm, and a presentation, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm, on Wednesday, November 6, at Bourne Hall in Spring Street, Ewell.
