An accomplished musician is retiring after more than 50 years with a symphony orchestra.

Eric Hastings, 88, who has been the leader of Epsom Symphony Orchestra for many years, will be missed by the players who are starting another season at Epsom Playhouse.

Mr Hastings joined the orchestra in 1961 after stints at London Philharmonic Orchestra and Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra.

He studied at the Guildhall and the Royal College of Music and went on the play seasons with the D’Oyly Carte Company, the Festival Ballet and other opera companies.

He also taught violin at St Georges College, Weybridge, and Caterham School, in Caterham, for many years.

Julia Burkhert will take over the reins as the orchestra's new leader before open rehearsals for the new season, featuring Mendelssohn, Wagner and Beethoven.

Musicians are welcome to join the rehearsals on September 5 and 12 at the Myers Hall at Epsom Playhouse.
