A care home has asked family members not to visit after a number of residents came down with ‘upset tummies’.

Sunrise of Banstead, which offers assisted and residential care, in Croydon Lane, first asked visitors to keep away on Thursday afternoon.

A staff member said that quite a few residents had recently come back from different hospitals and they had a ‘little bit’ of upset tummies and sickness.

She said: "It’s just a precaution. The advice is not to have visitors in or out of the building."

Epsom Hospital and other hospitals across the country have also asked people not to visit to stop the spread of the winter vomiting bug, norovirus.

But another staff member at the care home said their precaution had nothing to do with residents coming back from hospital or norovirus.

She said: "It’s just upset tummies. There is no news.

"It is not a big deal but something we do to stop anything from spreading.

"It’s what any home would do."

Resident Muriel Holyman, 99, said: "The advice is not to go in or out at the moment.

"I think they have to take precautions because so many people are being sick."

Ms Holyman, who had the winter vomiting bug herself a few years ago, said: "It’s a nasty thing."
