Residents have expressed shock and outrage at the NHS’ decision to call-off the merger of Epsom Hospital with Ashford and St Peter’s.

Bob Mackison, from Epsom, who has been heavily involved in the campaign to save Epsom Hospital, said: "I am outraged.  This whole process has cost a fortune.  The whole community needs this hospital.  That’s my hospital."

Bess Harding, of the Epsom Hospital Medical Equipment Fund, said: "It’s a great hospital and people have got to fight for it.

"People should be worried.  I want to encourage them to attend the trust’s board meeting on November 9 to let the trust know how they feel about it."

Rosemary Najim, a health campaigner in the area, said: "The reality is that the management emphasis was on St Helier and that is part of the problem.  But, we are going to pay very dearly for that now.

"Things are not as they should be."
