Liza Minnelli 'honoured' to play at Hampton Court Palace Festival
7:00am Sunday 27th May 2012 in Music By Paul Teed
Liza Minnelli reveals which 'swell' performers she admires at festival
As excitement builds ahead of this year’s Hampton Court Palace Festival, Paul Teed speaks to stage and screen superstar Liza Minnelli, who will headline the 20th anniversary concert.
Paul Teed: What can festival-goers expect from your performance at this year’s festival?
Liza Minnelli: Well, I have just six musicians and it’s called Confessions, which is also the title of my last album. Apart from tracks off the album, I’ll be performing my favourites – Cabaret, Maybe This Time and of course New York, New York. These are very important as they were written especially for me by Kander and Ebb and I never tire of them because every time I sing them, it’s unique for that particular audience.
PT: How does it feel to perform at the iconic Hampton Court Palace?
LM: I can’t wait to be back, I love London. I grew up here and have so many friends to see. And this will be extra special as it’s my only performance in the UK for 2012.
PT: Does the intimate setting work well for you as a festival venue?
LM: The venue at Hampton Court Palace will be more intimate than most will have seen me in before, which I’m really looking forward to.
PT: The line-up this year is very eclectic. What artists do you admire who will be performing at the festival?
LM: Well, I’m a huge fan of Frankie Valli – he’s had some fantastic hits, and what a nice man too. And Jools Holland played piano for me when I sang on his TV show a few years ago and he’s swell.
PT: Is it an honour for you to perform at this special 20th anniversary festival?
LM: Are you kidding? Absolutely. It’s such a real honour to be performing at the palace the same year as the Queen’s jubilee. You’ve all got to be there.
