Sutton Council is urging residents to recycle their Christmas trees and wrapping paper.

Last year, refuse collectors picked up more than 5.5 tonnes of Christmas trees during the two-week collection period, helping to keep down costly landfill charges.

Real Christmas trees can be put out for recycling next to green bins on usual collection days from Monday 9 to Friday 20 January.

They will then be taken to Beddington Lane, where they will be composted.

Greetings cards, cardboard packaging and wrapping paper can be put inside green bins, even if they contain glitter or have a foil or plastic coating.

Councillor Colin Hall, executive member for environment and climate change at Sutton Council, said: “We all have wrapping paper, cards, packaging and trees to throw out after Christmas, but if we all think about what we put in each bin, we can make a big difference.

“Reducing the amount of rubbish we send to landfill at Beddington Lane not only helps the environment but it also cuts costs.”

Recycling can also be taken to Kimpton Park Way Reuse and Recycling Centre. For more information visit sutton.gov.uk/recycling.
