Skoda Octavia Review

Skoda Octavia

Overall

rating: 4 stars

The first generation Octavia put Skoda on the map, and its successor continues the good work. As before, it's based on the same set of mechanical components as the Volkswagen Golf but with a considerably larger body that offers significantly better practicality.

It looks pretty reasonable, too. The amorphous aesthetics aren't going to set pulses racing, and the hatchback's rear end looks a bit too high from some angles, but overall it's a handsome machine. The interior is well equipped and well finished, with lots of quality-feeling Volkswagen Group switchgear and reasonable quality plastics. There's plenty of room for both front and rear seat occupants, and the Octavia is a very comfortable place to spend time. The hatchback's boot is massive, the (better looking) estate version's even more so.

On the road the Skoda manages to offer a good combination of comfort, refinement and performance. Granted, the chassis isn't the most involving drive in the segment, but it copes well with twisty roads and keeps the pilot well informed about what it's thinking. The compliant ride quality helps to take the edge off longer journeys, too. The only real complaint is with a bit too much wind noise finding its way into the cabin at motorway cruising speeds.

A very underpowered base engine is offered to justify the attractively low entry-level pricing. Avoid the 1.4 litre petrol unless you're happy to spend life in the slow lane. Other models give respectable performance, especially the 2.0 litre TDI diesel and the range-topping 2.0 litre TFSI turbocharged petrol engine in the vRS.

What's to like

1) Excellent cabin.
2) Comfortable and refined.
3) Excellent diesels.

What's not to like

1) Slightly ungainly rear-end design.
2) Poor quality audio system.
3) Base 1.4 litre petrol version is dreadfully slow.

Environment

rating: 2 stars

Respectable performance in the green stakes. 1.6 FSI petrol is reasonably clean and frugal, but the low-emitting 1.9 TDI diesel pumps out the least CO2. The diesel is also available with all wheel drive - Britain's greenest 4x4?

Styling

rating: 4 stars

Slightly Vectra-ish from some angles, but the distinctive Skoda front end looks good.

Handling

rating: 3 stars

The chassis can't deliver much in the way of excitement, but the Octavia remains safe and predictable as its limits approach

Comfort

rating: 4 stars

The smooth ride and excellent seats make the Octavia a good long-distance companion.

Quality

rating: 4 stars

Skoda moves quality up a notch. Very well assembled and with an impressively expensive looking cabin compared to the company's previous offerings.

Performance

rating: 3 stars

Basic 1.4 litre petrol engine is a cynical marketing ploy - too slow for all but the least demanding. 1.6 litre FSI petrol and 2.0 litre TDI diesel are the pick of the range.

Roominess

rating: 4 stars

Well proportioned when compared to family hatchback rivals like the Ford Mondeo. Plenty of room for both passengers and luggage - and the estate is massive.

Costs

rating: 4 stars

Residual values are reasonable compared to the very low standard of the rest of the segment, although it's still worth haggling hard for a generous discount to offset depreciation. Servicing and insurance are good value too - and the diesels are very economical.

Value

rating: 4 stars

Value isn't as compelling as it first appears once you factor in the gutless performance of the base engine. At least aircon is standard across the range.

Stereo

rating: 3 stars

Audio system in basic versions struggles to make itself heard at cruising speeds. Satnav works well but suffers from garish display fonts.
