Highly Recommended. BMW's baby executive saloon gets a sharp new look, but all the best bits remain untouched. It's great fun to drive and high secondhand values are guaranteed.
Rolls-Royce Phantom
Recommended. Rolls would like you to think this is the best saloon car in the world. It's certainly one of the most ostentatious.

Seat Toledo

Skoda Octavia

Recommended. Another excellent Skoda. The Octavia lacks much in the way of excitement, but it's big and good to live with.

Average. Great at absorbing the strain of long journeys, but overpriced compared to key rivals.
Land Rover Defender

Not recommended. In many ways, you can't really compare a Defender to other cars. If you want a genuine off-roader, it's one of the very best, and you'll put up with its limitations. But, if not, it's expensive, poorly equipped, cramped and noisy.
Audi A3

Recommended. Beautifully built and well styled, the new A3 may be costly but it provides a very enjoyable drive, much improved handling and superb engines, especially the 1.8 TFSI. The 1.9 TDIe is frugal, too.
