A Polish builder who died after being crushed by a wall in a Worcester Park street has been named as Grzegorz Wrężel.

Neighbours thought there had been a bomb scare on the residential road where it happened because of the large amount of police officers who went there.

Mr Wrezel, believed to be in his forties, was crushed by a collapsing wall in Manor Way, Worcester Park, at 10.40am on Wednesday, February 3. He died in hospital a week later.

He was reportedly working with a fellow builder on a house there for about two weeks before the accident happened.

Manor Way resident Doug Curwen said at the time: “They were doing an extension at the back of the house here.

“The other builder called me initially, so I went to have a look and the wall was out across his head and body.

“There must have been in total about 30 police and ambulance crews out, people around here actually thought they had a bomb in the garden or something.”

A spokesman for London Ambulance said: “We sent a number of resources to the scene including an advanced paramedic, the hazardous area response team (HART) and London's Air Ambulance.

“He was taken as a priority to St George's Hospital, Tooting, a major trauma centre, escorted by the doctor from London's Air Ambulance.”

An inquest will be held in due course.
